NHS vs private hearing aids: everything you need to know before you decide
If you’ve recently been told you have hearing loss, or you’ve noticed a change in your hearing and are looking into your options, you’ll quickly discover there are two main routes available in the UK: NHS hearing aids or private hearing aids.
Both have genuine advantages, and the right choice depends on your circumstances. This guide sets out the key differences honestly, including a third option that many people aren’t aware of, which combines the technology and service of private hearing care with prices that are significantly lower than the traditional private route.
If you’d prefer to talk it through with someone, our qualified UK audiologists are happy to help at any stage. The conversation is free, and there’s no obligation.
NHS hearing aids: what you need to know
The NHS provides hearing aids free of charge to people who qualify, which makes them an important and genuinely valuable option for many people, particularly those on a fixed income or those with more significant levels of hearing loss.
To access NHS hearing aids, you’ll typically need a referral from your GP to an NHS audiology department, where a hearing assessment will determine whether you’re eligible and which device is appropriate for your needs.
Where the NHS works well
For people with moderate to profound hearing loss who meet the eligibility criteria, NHS hearing aids can be an effective and completely free solution. NHS audiologists are qualified professionals, and the service includes ongoing support, free batteries (where applicable), and repairs covered under the NHS.
Where things get more complicated is the waiting. From your initial appointment through to fitting and any follow-up adjustments, NHS audiology services are in high demand, and the waiting times can stretch considerably.
The choice of devices is also more limited than most people expect, which can be frustrating if you were hoping for something more discreet or more technologically advanced.
The NHS primarily offers Behind-the-Ear (BTE) models, where the hearing aid sits behind the ear and connects to the ear canal via a custom earmould.
More discreet styles and advanced features such as Bluetooth connectivity, AI-powered noise processing, and rechargeable batteries are generally not available through the NHS. People with mild hearing loss may also find they don’t meet the eligibility threshold, even if their hearing loss is affecting their daily life.
Private hearing aids: what you need to know
Private hearing aids give you access to the full range of technology available from leading manufacturers, including Phonak, Resound, Signia, Rexton, and others.
You can choose from a wide range of styles, technology tiers, and features, and your hearing aids will be programmed specifically to your audiogram by a qualified audiologist.
Where private hearing aids work well
The breadth of choice is the biggest advantage. Whether you’re looking for the smallest, most discreet model available, the most advanced AI-powered speech processing, or simply a reliable pair of rechargeable hearing aids at a mid-range price, the private market has options at every level.
Waiting times are typically much shorter than those of the NHS, and ongoing support, fine-tuning, and aftercare are included as part of the service.
Where private hearing aids have limitations: Cost is the most significant barrier. Traditional private hearing aid providers, including high street audiologists and clinic chains, typically charge a substantial premium.
A pair of premium hearing aids bought through a high street clinic can cost considerably more than the same device bought elsewhere, once you factor in clinic overheads and the margin built into face-to-face appointments.
There is a third option worth knowing about
Many people comparing NHS and private hearing aids aren’t aware that there’s a middle ground, and it’s one that The Hearing Shop has been offering for over 15 years.
We sell hearing aids from all the leading brands at up to 60% less than the high street. Every pair is programmed to your personal hearing test results by our qualified UK audiologists before it’s dispatched, and all remote programming and fine-tuning is included. There’s no clinic visit needed at any stage.
The process is straightforward. You choose your hearing aids from our full range online, send us your most recent hearing test results, and our audiologists programme your devices to your specific hearing profile.
Your hearing aids are then delivered directly to your door, and we follow up remotely to fine-tune them once you’re wearing them day to day.
What you get is the same premium technology and qualified audiologist service as a traditional private provider, without the clinic overheads that drive up the cost on the high street. Our 60-day free returns policy also means that if your hearing aids aren’t right for any reason, you can return them without any quibble.

Which option is right for you?
The NHS is likely the right starting point if you have moderate to profound hearing loss, meet the eligibility criteria, are on a fixed income, and are comfortable with a more limited choice of devices and longer waiting times.
Traditional private hearing care may suit you if you need a custom-moulded in-ear device, have specific clinical needs that require face-to-face appointments, or prefer an entirely in-person experience regardless of cost.
The Hearing Shop is worth considering if you have a current hearing test result, know which brands or models interest you, or simply want access to the same premium technology as the high street at a significantly lower price, with a qualified audiologist service included and no clinic visit required.
If you’re not sure which applies to you, our team is happy to talk it through. There’s no pressure and no obligation.
