Why buy hearing aids online? Everything you need to know before you decide

Buying hearing aids online is something more and more people are considering, and for good reason. The technology has moved on, the service model has matured, and the savings compared to the high street are significant.

But it’s also a decision that raises genuine questions, particularly for first-time buyers. How does remote programming actually work? Is the service as good as going to a clinic? What happens if the aids aren’t right?

This article addresses all of those questions honestly, so you can decide whether buying online is the right route for you.

If you’d prefer to talk it through first, our qualified UK audiologists are happy to help. The consultation is free, and there’s no obligation.

Did you know

Our customers chose The Hearing Shop over other online hearing aid retailers because they benefited from:

  • Professional service and care
  • Specialist remote programming
  • Aftercare support by audiologists
  • Access to the latest hearing aid models
  • Lowest prices in the industry
  • Devices that compliment your lifestyle and specifications

The main benefits of buying hearing aids online

1. Significantly lower prices for the same technology

The most immediate benefit is cost. Hearing aids bought through a high street clinic carry a substantial premium that reflects the cost of running physical premises, staffing reception and clinic rooms, and the time involved in face-to-face appointments.

Online providers don’t have those overheads, which means the same premium hearing aids from the same leading manufacturers, programmed by the same qualified audiologists, can be made available at a fraction of the high street price. At The Hearing Shop, that difference is up to 60% less than you’d pay on the high street.

That’s not a compromise on quality. It’s the same devices, the same brands, the same programming. The saving comes from removing the clinic from the equation, not from cutting corners on the service.

2. Access to the full range of leading brands and models

High street clinics often stock a limited range of brands, sometimes tied to commercial partnerships with particular manufacturers.

Online providers typically offer the full market, which means you can compare models from Phonak, Resound, Signia, Rexton, and others side by side, and choose based on what’s right for your hearing loss and lifestyle rather than what’s available in a particular clinic.

3. Qualified audiologist service, without the clinic visit

One of the most common concerns about buying online is whether you’re giving up professional care. The answer, when you choose the right provider, is no.

At The Hearing Shop, every hearing aid is programmed to your personal hearing test results by one of our qualified UK audiologists before it’s dispatched. This isn’t automated or approximate. Your audiogram is analysed individually, and your hearing aids are set up specifically for your hearing profile, preferences, and lifestyle.

Once you receive your aids and start wearing them day to day, our audiologists follow up remotely to fine-tune anything that needs adjusting. This remote fine-tuning is included as standard and can be arranged at a time that suits you, with no clinic visit required at any stage.

4. Convenience that fits around your life

Buying hearing aids on the high street typically involves multiple appointments: an initial consultation, a fitting appointment, and follow-up visits for adjustments. Each one requires travel, time off, and often a significant wait between appointments.

Buying online removes all of that. You browse at home, speak to our audiologists at a time that suits you, send us your hearing test results, and your hearing aids arrive at your door, pre-programmed and ready to wear. Any fine-tuning happens remotely. There are no waiting rooms and no unnecessary trips.

5. A returns policy that removes the risk

One of the genuinely underappreciated advantages of buying from The Hearing Shop is our 60-day free returns policy. You have 60 days from delivery to try your hearing aids in your real daily life, and if they’re not right for any reason, you can return them without any quibble.

This is considerably more generous than the trial periods offered by most high street providers, and it means you’re not committing to a significant purchase without the ability to change your mind once you’ve actually worn the aids in your day-to-day environment.

Noticed a change in your hearing? It is always worth having an up-to-date hearing test before choosing a hearing aid. Our team are happy to talk through your options. Call us free on 0808 208 5154

How the process works, step by step

If you haven’t bought hearing aids online before, it’s worth understanding exactly what’s involved. The process is more straightforward than most people expect.

Step 1: Browse the range and choose your hearing aids

The best place to start is simply browsing. Our full range is available online, and you can filter by brand, style, technology level, and price to narrow things down at your own pace.

If you get to a shortlist and aren’t sure which way to go, our audiologists are happy to talk it through with you for free, based on your hearing test results and what your day-to-day life looks like.

Step 2: Send us your hearing test results

Before your order is dispatched, we’ll need your most recent audiogram. This is the result of your hearing test and shows exactly which frequencies and volumes you find difficult to hear.

If your test is more than two years old, it’s worth having a new one before you order. Many GP surgeries and high street opticians offer hearing tests free of charge.

Step 3: Our audiologists programme your hearing aids

Once we have your audiogram, one of our qualified UK audiologists programmes your hearing aids to your specific hearing profile before they’re dispatched. Your aids arrive ready to wear straight out of the box.

Step 4: Your hearing aids are delivered to your door

Once your hearing aids are dispatched, they’ll be with you within five to seven working days. Every order comes with free delivery and full tracking, so you’ll know exactly where your parcel is and when to expect it at your door.

Step 5: Remote fine-tuning included as standard

Once you’re wearing your aids day to day, our audiologists follow up to check how they’re performing and make any adjustments remotely. This is included as standard and can be arranged at a time that suits you. If further fine-tuning is needed at any point, we’re here throughout.

Is online the right route for you?

Buying hearing aids online works very well for most people, but it’s worth being honest about when it might not be the best fit.

If you need a fully custom-moulded in-ear device, or if you have complex clinical needs that genuinely require hands-on assessment, a face-to-face appointment with an audiologist may be more appropriate, even if it costs more. We’d rather tell you that than oversell the online model to someone it doesn’t suit.

For the majority of people with mild to profound hearing loss who have a current hearing test result and are comfortable managing their own hearing aids day to day, buying online from a trusted provider is a straightforward, well-supported, and considerably more affordable route than the high street.

With over 15 years of experience helping customers across the UK, we’ve refined the process to the point where it’s genuinely hassle-free for most people.

And if anything isn’t right once your aids arrive, our 60-day returns policy and ongoing remote support mean you’re never left without help.
